Silicon & Derivatives

Metallic silicon—produced in an environmentally friendly manner with many applications

The Silicon & Derivatives segment is divided into the Quartzite and Silicon Metal business units. Silicon metal is used, among other things, as an alloying element in aluminum and in the chemical industry for the production of siloxanes and silicones. In addition, there is strong long-term growth in demand for silicon metal and the silicon powder generated during production, driven in part by new applications in the context of climate protection. And we produce this raw material—which is so important for electronic components, solar systems, batteries, and many other innovative products—close to our customers in Europe and using 100% renewable energy: Our silicon metal plant, operated by the Group company PCC BakkiSilicon ehf., is located in northern Iceland, near the small town of Húsavík, where it primarily uses electricity generated from the abundant geothermal resources for which Iceland is known.

In addition, within the Silicon & Derivatives segment, we also operate the PCC Silicium S.A. quartzite quarry in Zagórze, Poland. Quartzite is a key raw material for our silicon metal production, and the Group’s own supply of this raw material ensures that our facility is independent of market fluctuations.

Metallic silicon and silicon powder have a wide range of applications in the chemical industry, such as in the production of silicones and silanes; they are used in the production of high-strength aluminum alloys, for example for the automotive industry; and they are also a key raw material for further processing in the manufacture of photovoltaic modules.

In addition, there is long-term growth in demand for metallic silicon due to new applications arising from the transition to climate protection measures. For example, together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, we are developing battery anode materials to improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries, the core components of electric mobility. And this is just one of several parallel development initiatives for silicon-based products, particularly for battery and photovoltaic applications, which offer enormous growth potential.
The production process is very energy-intensive, which is why Iceland—with its abundant geothermal and hydroelectric resources and comparatively low electricity costs—has emerged as an ideal location. By powering our production exclusively with electricity from Iceland’s abundant renewable energy sources, our facility produces significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions than comparable facilities worldwide. As a result, thecarbon footprint of applications that use the silicon metal we produce in Iceland as a raw material or component is also significantly smaller.
The Silicon & Derivatives segment is rounded out by the quartzite quarry and associated enrichment plant operated by PCC Silicium S.A. in Zagórze, Poland. The quartzite mined there is used both as fill material for the construction of roads and railroad tracks and as a supply to the ferroalloy industry. In addition, we use a portion of the quartzite in our silicon metal production facility. Quartzite is one of the key raw materials for silicon metal production.
